this is a very old old old drawing but it is nowhere on the internet so i have now put it on the internet. also, i drew this twice if you want to see another version that is the same but is drawn with board markers and a crayon. i’m not sure which version i prefer.
also also, the interview went ok. they asked me to work out 1.017 in my head to 14 decimal places, which was hard but not too hard.

Are these interviews sort of like oral exams are for us in the US? If this isn’t too personal, which university do you attend?
i don’t really know what american oral exams are like, but it was just sort of a chat about maths with a couple of questions put in to see how people think through problems.
i’m not at a university at the moment, i’m in the middle of applying. that interview was for oxford though.
That sounds brilliant. I’m at university right now, but planning on studying away for next semester. I initially planned on oxford as well, but for now I’ll just be visiting London! All the best to you — I hope all goes well with your interviews and applications.
These type of academic things interest me greatly, so I’d love to hear how everything goes.
I rather enjoy this version more. Also, the ‘A’ in accountant reminds me slightly of the ‘Deathly Hallows’ symbol from Harry Potter.

I’m consumed by self-doubt. 1^7 is quite easy. 0.01^7 is too. But 1.01^7 is awfully intricate for head math…isn’t it? I’m tapping skeptically at my calculator.

and i got a letter from the university this morning, it was a rejection. but that’s not a bad thing, it was an incredibly boring university.

boring in the sense that people there are very privileged, for want of a better word, and there’s not much to do around there. but maybe i’m just being bitter, who knows.
OMG the binomial expansion. That was a lovely explanation, and confirmed my nagging suspicions that college was mostly an expensive forum for forgetting what I once knew in high school.
Leave Oxford to its pretentiousness–I don’t doubt you’ll find a better home. (Come to the US! Here we give advanced degrees to derelicts who can barely do algebra!)
